 In the Beginning.......................
The beginning being 1966, Betty & I started Rohde's Nursery. The nursery industry, back then, did not grow many birch trees. Birch became a very popular plant and the only way to get a birch tree was by collecting or digging it up from native areas in Wisconsin, (Marquette Co.) For 3 years prior to 1966, I would dig up the birch, and wholesale them to other nurseries and garden centers, primarily in South-east Wisconsin. In 1966 we began the full time Nursery/Landscape business. At that time I had a 1952 1.5 ton truck that could get up to 50 mph on the highway! My first landscape job was a lawn installation on a new house. I worked up the soil with a borrowed tractor and the rest was by hand. A lot of raking and loading stones by shovel & wheel barrow. Shortly thereafter I purchased a used Ford 9N tractor for $675.00, which we still have today. |

For the next few years we acquired a few more pieces of equipment and a new truck. There were plenty of new houses that needed landscaping so we stayed very busy.
By 1984 our three children, Denise, Teri & Dane graduated from Slinger High School in Slinger, WI. To this point we lived in Allenton and would drive up to our farm near Neshkoro in Marquette Co. In the winter of '84, Betty & I moved the business to Neshkoro. Our son Dane began working for us in the mid-80's, landscaping apartment houses, residences & commerical properties.
We planted more trees on the farm and along with our tree wholesale business and landscaping , kept plenty busy. In 2003 the farm east of us became available with frontage on Highway 73. We purchased this property and in 2004 started moving our trees to the "Plant Center" along Highway 73. Because of re-construction of Highway 73 and the Duck Creek Ave. intersection, we are just getting started in 2006. We still provide an excellent design & landscaping service in central Wisconsin and provide plant material to contractors state wide.
WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS OVER 40 YEARS AND STILL ENJOY WHAT WE DO AND ARE HAVING FUN DOING IT! |
